Gopher Uniform History 1977-83

Helmet

The Gophers went their first maroon helmets starting in 1977.  The color of the facemask and helmet varied through this era, as did the size of the M decal.  Some of these differences are fairly noticeable, while others are slight.  The early helmets were Riddell and Bike and were maroon helmets with gray facemasks.  A gold brick M was worn on each side of the helmet and these had no outline as did the later helmets starting in 1984.  Gold star award decals were used on the 77 to 79 helmets.  Some examples of player numbers can be seen on front of the helmets from this time period as well.
